The Kitchen at Maison

Purely and simply sublime

The mission statement reads “with a philosophy that’s simple all about taste sensations that will surprise and delight your palate" and you know you are in for a treat.

I swopped my usual lunch partner, the husband, for my dear friend, Maughin and as we set of on our mini adventure (she drives a Mini) we chatted excitedly about our lunch at Maison. As the wheels crunched on the gravel and the sounds of the rooster greeted us, the lovely smell of the country made us breathe in deeply, we knew we had found the right place. Set in a beautiful farmhouse,  and decorated in simple, natural finishes, it is a place where you leave your baggage at the door and settle in next to the fire.

It seemed only fair to start with a glass of the Maison bubbles, 100% chardonnay, savouring the surroundings, admiring the décor, and eager to study the menu. A simple concept of small plates with few ingredients, meaning each has to be the best. Fresh and sourced locally there are choices of 3, 4, 5 or 6 courses with or without wine pairing - we opted for the 5 course menu with wine pairing.

The bread from the chef is to start, and it is a very tough task not to gobble it all up. But we showed restraint, somewhat, leaving space for what was to come. Plated perfection!

Each course offered up little delights, just enough to tickle your palate but still leaving you wanting more. Beautiful, vibrant and fragrant, the conversation lulled as the plates arrived and the wine was poured - each course delectable. Every one looked a picture and most importantly tasted good. The fire crackled, course after course arrived, the glasses were topped up and our lovely waitress interrupted every now and again to talk about vintages and oak barrels. A rare treat having such a well informed sommelier double as our waitress.

Finishing with pudding and coffee we were like lazy puppies enjoying the fireside refusing to go to bed. It was time to go. On our way out, we stocked up on Chardonnay and Shiraz and satiated and happy buckled up for the trip home.

There is a tranquility about Maison which speaks to each sense, leaving you with an umami experience long savoured after the last course has been served.

Thank you Jacobus and team for such a divine experience, I look forward to returning soon.

Until next time, Lucie
