Schoon Bread Cafe

Eating with purpose

Artisanal baker Fritz Schoon and his wife Chanelle have opened their doors in the heart of Franschhoek, a gorgeous space of exposed brick and rustic sophistication we have come to expect from this pair. Devotees to this brand will know their journey, but if this is the first you are hearing of them, I have to ask what rock you've been under.

Originally from Stellenbosch, you could find Fritz baking his famous sourdough in de Oude Bank, queues out the door, locals and foreigners alike, waiting for a table. That was a very long ago and since, have opened a few cafés, the newest in the family, a little piece of bread heaven on a square at the top of the Franschhoek high street.

You won't find a better pasteis de nata this side of Lisbon, custard tarts with a rich egg custard nestled in shatteringly crisp pastry. I can never seem to get past the pasteis, but the other pastries are just as delightful. The small menu of sandwiches and rustic plates are just what is needed to accompany that coffee meeting with friends, or with Mom or even just alone as you contemplate life, cappuccino in hand. It is also the perfect stop for a coffee on the go, or a baguette needed for your picnic in the Winelands.

The perfect respite from the everyday grind.

In the words of the baker himself " persistence and perseverance are valuable attributes, but nothing engrains humility like the pursuit of producing the perfect loaf of bread".

Bread is life here, and it's delicious.
