The Magic of Bubbles

Champagne Cellar | $

Did you know that a bottle of champagne contains 250 million bubbles? That Pol Roger named a champagne after Winston Churchill, or that Moet & Chandon has over 30 million bottles in their cellars. There are roughly 9206 brands of champagne marketed and that Napoleon's favourite drink was champagne?

Anyway I digress ...
Situated on the hills of the Franschhoek Pass, this family-run farm and boutique cellar makes Methode Cap Classique (MCC) using the traditional method. I am not sure whether you have ever experienced a champagne cave in France, but this is as close to one as any.

Nick or Gaye, the owners, will take you into the cellar and introduce you to the history of Champagne. It's cool and dark and musty with bottles covered in dust as far as the eye can see. You'll learn how MCC is made with the highlight, riddling and degorging a bottle. Conclude with a tasting of the Cap Classique and Thierry Lesne and Beaufort et Fils Champagnes, before emerging into the light, box in hand with dreams of one day owning a champagne farm.

They also have a beautiful villa for rent, which, much to the husbands delight has a golf tee to launch many a ball into the valley. The views are unprecedented and one feels for a moment you may in fact be in Provence. Life doesn't get much better.

All experiences are by appointment only, so book in advance.
